Clogging:  America's dance

What is clogging?

Clogging is a popular rhythmic percussive American folk dance similar to tap and Irish step dancing. It began in the Appalachian Mountains in the mid 1700's, brought to America by Irish, Scottish, English and Dutch Germans who settled there.

Clogging was also influenced by Cherokee Indian step dances, as well as African rhythms and movements.

It was from clogging that tap dancing eventually evolved.

Cloggers of all ages dance to any type of upbeat music, including country, pop, and rap! It's easy to learn, an amazing stress reducer and a great way to exercise while making new friends and having fun!

Clogging is one of the few dance forms also considered a sport, forming teams and competing in area, state and national events. It is the State Folk Dance of North Carolina and Kentucky, and the ONLY dance native to North Carolina!
